Seaford Community Cinema Film Festival: The Ipcress File [PG]
Date: Saturday 14 September 2019
Time: 7:30pm
Where: The Barn Theatre, Saxon Lane BN25 1QL
Town: Seaford

Remember those portraits of Michael Caine as Harry Palmer, un-suave in yellow hair, white face, red tie and black glasses frames? This pre-festival and new season opener will feature a talk, 'The Ipcress File, Pop Art and London’s cultural scene in the 1950s and early 1960s' by Professor Alex Seago of the Faculty of Media at Richmond, the American university in London.

Novelist Len Deighton’s spy was regarded as the anti-Bond for his unglamorous portrayal of spycraft in the 1960s. Set designer Ken Adam and composer John Barry both also worked on the Bond films and a Bond producer, Harry Saltzman, was also involved. The Ipcress File, made in 1965, received the Best British Film BAFTA and in 1999 was placed 59th in the list of best 100 British films of the 20th century.

Its Techniscope format allowed cinematographer Otto Heller to construct images in deep focus, shooting behind objects and allowing both the objects in the foreground and the action taking place in the background to be in focus.

FESTIVAL FINALE

Atticus Finch, a lawyer in the Depression-era South, defends a black man against an undeserved rape charge, and his children against prejudice…

Made in 1962 from Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name published two years earlier, its protagonist, Atticus Finch, must rank as one of the most enduring heroes against racism. The story is based on Lee’s observations of her family, her neighbours and an event that occurred near her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama in 1936 when she was 10 years old.

Starring Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch and Mary Badham as the six-year-old Scout, the film marks the debuts of Robert Duvall, William Windom and Alice Ghostley. It received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and was a box-office success, earning more than six times its budget. The film won three Oscars, including Best Actor for Peck, and was nominated for eight, including Best Picture.

Tickets £6 non-members, £5 members, £3.50 18 and under.

Holed up at The Cricketers’ Arms, the permanently ravenous Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a second job with one Stanley Stubbers, who is hiding from the police and waiting to be re-united with Rachel. ‘The course of true love never did run smooth.’

A feuding fairy King and Queen of the forest cross paths with four runaway lovers and a troupe of actors trying to rehearse a play. As their dispute grows, the magical royal couple meddle with mortal lives leading to love triangles, mistaken identities and transformations… with hilarious, but dark consequences.

Shakespeare’s most famous romantic comedy will be captured live from the Bridge Theatre in London. Gwendoline Christie, Oliver Chris, David Moorst and Hammed Animashaun lead the cast as Titania, Oberon, Puck and Bottom.

Directed by Nicholas Hytner, this production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream will build on the success of his immersive staging of Julius Caesar (NT Live 2018). The Bridge Theatre will become a forest: a dream world of flying fairies, contagious fogs and moonlight revels, surrounded by a roving audience following the action on foot.
