For the first week of the Newhaven Festival St. Michael's church is being transformed into a restorative space to bathe in the sound of Newhaven birdsong.

It's a simple idea. From morning till evening the church is going to be filled with field recordings of birdsong taken in the hills, cliffs and woodlands surrounding the town. You can go for as long or as little as you like. Sit in silence in the beautiful 12th century Norman church and bathe in the surround-sound of birds.

There's no extra info, no chatting, no interactions necessary. Just a longing for some still time in this architectural jewel of the town.

Curated by Alistair Appleton, with field recordings from Newhaven acoustic artist Alice Etteridge and the kind support of Rev. Martin Miller and members of St. Michael's congregation.

The Original Theatre Company and York Theatre Royal present Alan Bennett’s The Habit of Art.

Alan Bennett is one our greatest and most celebrated playwrights, with a cavalcade of stage and screen blockbusters including The History Boys, The Madness of King George and Talking Heads.

He is applauded as a genius for his sharp character observations and treasured for the way he beautifully balances wit, wistfulness and compassion.

In The Habit of Art Bennett gives us a play about a meeting between the poet WH Auden and the composer Benjamin Britten. Exploring friendship, rivalry and heartache this multi-layered masterpiece examines the joy, pain and emotional cost of creativity.

This production, directed by Philip Franks, marks the first ever revival of the play and stars the Olivier Award-winning Matthew Kelly (Of Mice and Men, Toast and Pride and Prejudice) and David Yelland (Chariots of Fire and The Crown).

The rats of London don't like cats. They steal money from Alderman Fitzwarren and make sure Dick is blamed and dismissed in disgrace. Determined to prove his innocence, with the help of Sarah the Cook and Idle Jack, Dick joins the crew of Captain Cluck's ship on a voyage to the Barbary Coast. The evil leader of the rats causes the ship to sink. Dick and his companions survive only to be brought before the all-powerful Sheikh Yaboddi. He is in an unforgiving mood because his country is overrun with rats. Dick's feline friend saves the day; the adventurers are amply rewarded and return with their reputations restored. Along the way there is song, dance and a massive helping of laughter.
